HP-Foxconn wave cloud kit under the nose of Google, Facebook et al ? The Register

He said HP tried flogging its Scalable systems designed for enterprises to cloud service providers, but those customers didn't require various features in the computers, such as on-board management and power redundancy. The web goliaths prefer to spec their own lightweight machines and get the custom kit built by ODMs. "The service providers at the top end see no value in that [unnecessary] technology," Stephen told The Channel. Architecturally, the cloud giants can (in theory) "absorb" a failure from one to 50 racks without service disruption due to the scale of their deployments and build hardware resilience at the rack level, the HP veep said. "This deal with Foxconn gives us the ability to capture some demand with the right products at the right cost in a faster way than we could, and at a scale most of our enterprise customers can't comprehend," Stephen added.

"The latest enhancements to our HP Integrity solutions demonstrate HPs commitment to provide customers with purpose-built, highly-available infrastructure capabilities for their most critical applications." The enhancements to the HP-UX 11i v3 operating system will enable organizations to upgrade virtualized applications between Integrity i2 and i4 servers with no downtime, virtualize larger workloads that double the capacity of virtual machines, offer up to 32 processing cores and 256 GB of memory, leverage HP's Soft Reboot technology on Integrity i4 server blades to cut reboot times in half, and reconfigure virtualized I/O without any downtime. The upgrades to CloudSystem Matrix with HP-UX include the ability to deploy larger private clouds by having workloads run vPars v6 partitioning technology or through direct I/O networking. In addition, HP is offering the solution with two-socket licensing, which will lower the cost of private clouds based on HP-UX, and with the ability to identify inefficient servers processes, which will increase data center processing capacity and enabling more resources for mission-critical workloads. HP also is rolling out two new NonStop servers for small and midsize enterprises (SMEs). Both the NonStop NS2300 and NS2400 fault-tolerant systems are powered by Intel's Itanium 9500 chips , which were launched in 2012, which HP officials said will bring a 50 percent increase in the main memory capacity, which will enable organizations to run more workloads than on previous systems. The new NonStop servers and enhancements to HP-UX 11i v3 and CloudSystem Matrix for HP-UX are available now. HP's new offerings come at a time when the Unix server market continues to shrink, with more high-end workloads running on x86-based systems. IDC analysts found that in the fourth quarter 2013, Unix server revenues fell 20.2 percent over the same period in 2012. The $1.9 billion in revenues accounted for 13.6 percent of all server revenues for the quarter. HP officials two years ago kicked off Project Odyssey, an initiative designed to give organizations running mission-critical workloads a choice of Integrity server platforms powered by Itanium or x86 chips and running a range of OSesfrom HP-UX to Windows to Linuxand all sharing a common converged infrastructure.

IBM's Loss Is Hewlett-Packard Company's Gain in Hardware (HPQ, IBM)

Mark Minasi said it best at IT/Dev Connections 2013 when he simply said, "You must learn PowerShell." I think we probably repeated the statement 50 times through the week of the conference. (P.S. You'll be able to see Mark speak again at IT/Dev Connections 2014 ) HP has released version 1.1 of the company's own PowerShell cmdlets for ProLiant server hardware. The revision change brings 5 new cmdlets, IPv6 support, performance improvements with reduced code size, and bugs fixes. The HP Scripting Tools for Windows PowerShell includes a set of PowerShell cmdlets that provide configuration management for HP hardware. This release provides a set of cmdlets for managing and configuring HP iLO 3 and iLO 4 using PowerShell scripts. It provides a native PowerShell interface that simplifies writing scripts. These cmdlets provide out-of-band automation from a Windows Management workstation directly to iLO systems. The download starts here: HP Scripting Tools for Windows PowerShell Fortunately, the PowerShell download does not fall under HP's recent support change announcement , so the download is freely accessible. There are separate downloads for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows and 8.1, and additionally for Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 , and Windows Server 2012 R2.

Shortly after IBM reported its Q4 results, it announced a deal to sell off its low-end server business to Lenovo for $2.3 billion. This product line, known as "System x," has been losing market share recently. Revenue declined 16% in Q4, and the rate of decline ticked up to 18% in Q1, the first quarter following the announcement. Hewlett-Packard makes its move HP hasn't had an easy time in the enterprise hardware market, either. Its highly profitable Business Critical Systems products (the equivalent of IBM's System z) have been in long-term decline for several years. Business Critical Systems revenue has plummeted from $2.3 billion in FY10 to $1.2 billion last year. HP is making progress in some parts of the enterprise hardware market. However, unlike IBM, HP is making progress in other parts of the hardware market.

HP Moonshot: Micro Servers Versus Virtualisation

myloc hosting servers on shelves First, HPs Ed Ellis showed off a system based on the m700, a specialised AMD cartridge for hosted desktop infrastructure (HDI). He showed it running six times faster than a conventional virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) system. A video paused and froze when delivered through VDI, but ran smoothly over the Moonshot powered HDI. The audience was quick to point out that this wasnt actually surprising: the clue to the speedup was in the name of the technology. In a hosted system, each remote desktop gets its own micro server in the Moonshot box. In a virtual system, multiple users share a higher-powered server. So its not really surprising Moonshot serves desktops faster. The real comparison would take into account the power and space demands, and maybe the cost of the system which is what came next: we were introduced to a real HP Moonshot user: Christoph Herrnkind, chief operating officer of the German hosting company myLOC, which in the next week will start to offer dedicated servers based on Moonshot. Moonshot replaces. servers on shelves?

Server Review: Hp Proliant Bl460c Gen8 Blade Server

Red Hat Launches the Open Software-Defined Storage Experience at HP Grenoble Customer Center - MarketWatch

Standard networking equipment is an HP 554FLB FLexFabric 10 Gb 2-port controller. This device supports a wide range of features including FCoE, Flex-10, TCP/IP offload engine, hardware-based accelerated iSCSI and iSCSI boot. While both ports are capable of autosensing 1 Gb or 10 Gb, they will only operate at the same speed. Two I/O expansion mezzanine slots provide additional networking capability in the form of dual-port 10 Gb NICs or a quad-port 1 Gb adapter. You can also add a dual-port 8GB Fibre Channel HBA for connecting to a SAN or QDR and FDR InfiinBand. An internal micro SDHC and USB 2.0 port provides an easy way to implement a VMware ESXi host node using only flash media for booting the hypervisor. This leaves all of the SAS disk available for local VM storage. It would also be simple to configure a storage cluster for either VMware or Hyper-V using HP's Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA) software with this type of arrangement. Management Remote management of servers is pretty much taken for granted these days, but it's still worth talking about. HP's iLO 4 provides everything you could want in a remote management tool. You will need to purchase an additional license to take advantage of all iLO features including the remote console capability.

Why Did The IBM VP Board HP's Moonshot?

HP Moonshot Discovery Lab Without this critical fix, the company said, the affected models, after being in service for an extended period of time, could potentially fail to complete the POST process during any event that causes a power disruption to occur (such as power-cycle, cold boot, or power outage). If the failure occurs and the server cannot complete the boot process, the blade system board must be replaced. Another issue affected some ProLiant server models in 2011 . Without a required firmware update, which HP characterized as a critical fix, the use of certain SATA hard drives could cause data transfer errors. The advisory warned: Neglecting to perform the required action could leave the server in an unstable condition, which could potentially result in sub-optimal server performance or data corruption or loss.

HP ProLiant BL460c Gen8 Blade Server - Figure 1 Moonshot, she emphasised, is based around the trend towards systems which combine hardware and software to support specific workloads, and the fact that this hardware has to operate on a tighter power budget. Power consumption, and those green data centre elements its not a new concern, but it is still as painful today as ever, she said. At the same time the hardware has to support what HP calls a new style of computing, based on the cloud, Big Data and mobile apps. Goin' South: Cisco Offers 'opflex' As Alternative To Openflow | Light Reading

(NYSE: VMW). Cohen said Cisco is working with its partners initially, and hopes to broaden support to other companies later. Of course, Cisco's competitors don't have significant incentive to support OpFlex early on, and without their support the standard looks unlikely to move beyond Cisco's sphere of influence, significant though that may be. OpFlex is part of Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure, a hybrid physical and virtual strategy using Nexus 9000 switches and an Application Policy Infrastructure Controller that centralizes and automates policy management for the Nexus 9000 fabric.

Cisco reveals its Internet of Everything router - Network World

cisco router Sign in Network World - Cisco Tuesday unveiled its Internet of Everything router , a device intended to address the growth in Internet traffic brought about by cloud, mobile, video and machine-to-machine communications. The Network Convergence System (NCS), which was expected, is the culmination of three years of work by 450 engineers and $250 million in funding, Cisco says. NCS includes a new network processor Cisco introduced two weeks ago: the nPower X1 . The system is not a core router like the Cisco CRS, or a successor to the CRS, the company says. Rather, it is a network fabric designed to scale CRS cores and ASR 9000 edge routers in service provider networks from centralized systems to distributed architectures able to accommodate the growth of Internet connected things, like cars, homes and machines. [BUT DIDNT THEY JUST ANNOUNCE New Cisco core router boasts 10X capacity of original ] Cisco expects trillions of these device-driven events to come online in the next decade, a situation the company refers to as the Internet of Everything. Cisco says it plans to equip the CRS systems with the nPower chip as well to improve scale and introduce programmability into the platform for core routing requirements. Cisco says the NCS can transport the entire NetFlix library in less than one second in a full multi-chassis deployment.

Hp Challenges Cisco Routers

HP revamps FlexFabric fixed and modular switches

HP has three new FlexFabric modular switches: The 11900, 12910, and 12916 The ProCurve Networking unit from the Palo Alto, Calif., company adds a pair of branch/regional office routers that challenge comparable Cisco routers on price, maintenance, and ease of configuration and management, said Brice Clark, global director of strategic planning for HPs ProCurve Networking, in Roseville, Calif. The ProCurve Secure Router 7000dl- series routers are half the price of comparable Cisco routers and offer wire-speed performance. "Our warranty is lifetime on hardware and software. That is unprecedented in the router market space," said Clark. Although HP ProCurve switch customers who signed up to test the new routers are taking a wait-and-see approach, they are hopeful that the new routers will deliver on their promise, according to Tom Jenkins, network services manager at Security Finance Corp., in Spartanburg, S.C. "If the cost points are what they say, itll be much less expensive than the Cisco alternatives. The other thing thats attractive is the lifetime firmware upgrades and software support," said Jenkins. ProCurve Networking also sought to make the new routers competitive by building firewall and NAT (Network Address Translation) security features into the routers, which also offer optional VPN features that include an easy-to-use configuration manager, Clark said. HP also includes traffic prioritization for VOIP (voice over IP), although HP does not integrate all the functions necessary for VOIP, said Nick Lippis, president of Lippis Consulting, in Hingham, Mass. "You still need a separate voice device, communication manager or even Ciscos Call Manager Express behind it," Lippis said. Despite 3Com Corp.s re-entry into the enterprise router space, Lippis said he believes that the market has been lacking "a major second source" for routers.

Hewlett-Packard Ratchets Up Cisco Rivalry

Despite 3Com Corp.s re-entry into the enterprise router space, Lippis said he believes that the market has been lacking "a major second source" for routers. "Vulnerable isnt the right word, but conditions are right for a major player like HP with the breadth of products BYOD and services to go after that market and gain share," he said. The two routers include the 7102dl with two slots for WAN interface modules. It can support up to four T1/E1 links. The 7203dl router has two slots for WAN interface modules and one wide slot that can accept an eight-port T1/EL module. It can support a total of 12 T1/E1 links. The routers are due in April, and the chassis for each are $1,499 and $2,999, respectively. Modules range from $399 up to $3,999 for the eight-port T1/El module. HPs ProCurve Networking unit also integrated the functions of its separate secure wireless networking appliance into a new Access Controller Module for the ProCurve 5300xl LAN switch. The new module provides users with secure access to appropriate network services on any of HPs ProCurve 5300xl edge switches. It provides a personalized view of the network based on business need, seamless Layer 3 roaming across multiple IP address domains, and wireless data privacy with 19 different VPN clients supported.

The 11900 mod box has a total of 7.7Tb/sec of switching capacity and uses a mix of HP and third-party ASICs (Shaikh didn't want to name names) and can handle 5.7 billion packets per second. The port-to-port hop latency can be as low as 3 microseconds, which is about as good as it gets out there right now in network world. The switch can have up to 384 10Gb/sec ports or 64 40Gb/sec ports, or a mix of the two. The machine has about half the latency of the Nexus 7010 switch from Cisco using F2 modules and offers about a third the cost per port and a third better density with 40Gb/sec ports than equivalent Cisco gear, according to Shaikh.

HP Routers Tighten Network Security

HP (HPQ) said on Nov. 11 it will pay $7.90 a share, a 39% premium over 3Com's closing share price before the deal was announced. Buying 3Com (COMS) pushes HP further onto turf dominated by Cisco (CSCO), the world's largest maker of routers and switches and other equipment that knits together corporate networks and transfers information across the Internet. The acquisition also helps HP bulk up in China, where 3Com has vied with Cisco in part through lower prices. "Companies are looking for ways to break free from the business limitations imposed by a networking paradigm that has been dominated by a single vendor," Dave Donatelli, who runs the HP division focused on servers and networking for businesses, said in a statement, in a thinly veiled reference to Cisco. The acquisition comes amid a turnaround that's transformed 3Com from an industry laggard to a viable competitor to Cisco in key markets and products in recent years. "3Com is a growing company," Current Analysis analyst Steven Schuchart said in a recent interview, before the deal was announced. "They're killing it in China. For the first time in a decade, they're looking good." At the same time it announced the purchase, HP also released preliminary fiscal fourth-quarter results, saying net income rose to 99 a share from 84 a year earlier, while sales dropped 8% to $30.8 billion. HP also reported profit, excluding certain one-time items, of $1.14 a share. That beat the $1.11-a-share average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News.

The Cisco Nexus Or The Juniper Ex Series?

Image Caption The Nexus 7000 uses Cisco's NX-OS operating system, increasing the product's complexity and raising operating costs. Conclusion: New operating systems aside, we took a hard look at the performance specs and, in the end, it was no contest. We chose Juniper. The bottom line was better performance with lower overall operating costs. "There has been a lot of hype around the Cisco Nexus. What's driving this is the unprecedented demand for bandwidth and network managers on a quest to find a solution. Since Nexus runs NX-OS, IT will be introducing a new operating system into their environment.

The firms senior vice president for public sector, Patrick Finn, told Nextgov that increasing numbers of rogue partners pretend to posses Cisco accreditation but are in fact selling bogus software and hardware. Undercover investigators from the US Government Accountability Office are said to have uncovered 40 quotes for counterfeit parts from online retailers based in China after placing orders for electronics between August 2011 and February 2012. Cisco has a whole section of its partner site devoted to such matters, including a case study example of a reseller who purchased 40 Cisco 1841 Integrated Services Routers from a broker and sold them on to a government department using the official channels. However, the department was not satisfied with the provenance of the kit, as Cisco explains : Cisco traced the serial numbers to the original routers, two of which were installed in a clients network in Asia Pacific. Cisco Brand Protection team members photographed the serial numbers of the original routers and provided this evidence to the government department. After further investigation, it was found that the 40 Cisco 1841 Integrated Services Routers had been illegally modified to a Security (K9) bundle, which costs twice the price of a standard version. Market watcher IHS iSuppli reported last month that the number of high risk suppliers selling counterfeit tech products to US government and other customers has grown by two thirds since 2002. Although the analyst admitted it is difficult to pinpoint the origin of parts, given that key markings are often falsified, China and the US were fingered as the top two locations for suppliers engaged in dodgy dealings. Last year was a record one for fake parts, with 1363 counterfeit incidents reported by iSuppli.

Coming soon: Wireless Cisco multi-function router

Theres no reason to not do it, Kerravala said during an interview, adding he predicts Cisco may also add Wide Area File Services (WAFS) technology http://www.prodec.co.uk/products/hp-proliant-bl490c-g7-603599r-b21-blade-server-refurbished-1-x-intel-xeon-x5670-293ghz which is designed to reduce the amount of time it takes to access and save files over wide-area networks - to the ISR routers. The ISR series is aimed at small to mid-sized firms, and at large enterprises operating branch offices. Cisco officials would not say when the company plans to launch a wireless version of ISR or what the product will be named, nor would they release other details. The ISR family includes: the 1841 Router, aimed at small to mid-sized organizations, which has intrusion prevention, firewall and virtual private networking capability; the 2800 series, which supports both security functions and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and targets mid-sized businesses and large organizations operating branch offices; and the 3800 series, which supports security, VoIP and power over Ethernet. Since it was launched last fall, the ISR series has accounted for about 60 per cent of Ciscos edge router sales, Cisco Canadas vice-president for channel operations, Steve Simmons, said during a media briefing Monday. With ISR, its the fastest ramp-up of any product weve ever had, said John Chambers, Ciscos president and chief executive officer, who made his remarks during Tuesdays general session. Chambers said a big question for Cisco and its partners is how to design voice, video and data networking products tailored to the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market, which for Cisco is growing more quickly than the enterprise and service provider markets. He added vendors need to sell products designed to solve business problems for specific industries such as retail and health care rather than products designed only with a function in mind, such as storage, security or wireless.

The 3745 accepts cards from the 3825 and can be purchased for more than half the cost of "the latest generation gear," the reseller says. Does that mean greater than 50% of the price, or less than 50% of the price? One caveat: the 3745 has reached end-of-sale status, but NHR says Cisco should still support it for another five years.

The top 10 cloud-based security tools to protect your network in a hurry

Not only does it make sure none of the bad stuff gets in, but it also protects any outgoing data. Proofpoint further promises that while it stores that data to prevent data loss, it does not have the keys to decrypt any of the information. Zscaler Zscaler calls its product the Direct to Cloud Network, and like many of these products, boasts that its much easier to deploy and can be much more cost efficient than traditional appliance security. The companys products protect you from advanced persistent threats by monitoring all the traffic that comes in and out of your network as a kind of checkpost in the cloud. But you dont have to filter all that traffic in from one central point.

Palo Alto Update Extends File Visibility, Wildfire Detection

Palo Alto Networks acquires stealthy start-up with NSA roots

"We're segmenting our partner data so we know who is selling Wildfire and we have this long-tail opportunity that when we get the messaging correct, we believe the in-line message will kick off," Myers said. "You can deploy Wildfire behind an existing firewall, whether it is us, Cisco or Fortinet." In a January presentation to investors, Palo Alto said its revenue increased 49 percent year over year, and partners have told CRN that they are replacing some of their customers' legacy firewalls with Palo Alto appliances. The company's competitors are taking notice. In August, Check Point unveiled its ThreatCloud Emulation Service that inspects suspicious files in a sandbox. Fortinet, for its part, is testing its FortiSandbox appliance for file behavioral analysis. FireEye, meanwhile, sells an advanced threat detection platform that uses a virtual sandbox to inspect files. Palo Alto is working on incident response capabilities, and engineers are developing other advanced detection features, according to Myers, who pointed to the company's recent acquisition of Morta Security as key. Partners can put Palo Alto appliances in transparent mode, placing them in tandem with existing firewalls to help highlight differences, said Daniel Payne, CTO of Evansville, Ind.-based Pinnacle Computer Services, a Palo Alto partner.

Juniper Networks Vs. Palo Alto Networks

U.S. Patent No. 7,107,612 - Describes approaches for dynamically generating rules based on data received by a network instead of using a fixed set of rules. The key term at issue in this patent is "rule." While Juniper offers no construction, Palo Alto proposes to construe the term as "a policy for filtering packets across multiple sessions, as distinct from a lookup table." This is not surprising since such a definition would narrow the claim and specifically exclude a lookup table from the claim's scope. Juniper counters with Palo Alto's own expert's admission that rules are just another general data structure and can be stored in a hash table. U.S. Patent No. 6,772,347 - Describes efficient packet filtering in a firewall by initially denying or allowing packets using access control list engine and sorting them accordingly by either allowing to pass or finally denying . The key term in dispute in the '347 patent is "sorting packets into initially denied packets." Juniper believes no construction is necessary, while Palo Alto proposes the term to mean: "applying rules to make a first determination that identifies packets to be dropped." Palo Alto bases its argument on the patent specification which discloses the initial denial by the ACL engine as the identification of packets to be initially denied. However, no packets are dropped during that phase, but in fact proceed to a dynamic filter which allows some of the initially denied packets to pass through the firewall. Packets are "dropped" only after they've been sorted during the second phase.

Juniper vs. Palo Alto Networks: Firewall court battle set to begin

Juniper is seeking an injunction to bar firewall sales by Palo Alto and possibly reap monetary damages as well. Palo Alto declined to talk about the lawsuit, and sources at Juniper spoke only on background. But the Juniper lawsuit, which commenced as legal filings two years ago and is now expected to go to a jury trial in Wilmington, Del., speaks for itself. Already an Insider? Sign in Network World - Call it the fist fight over firewalls for 2014. Juniper Networks is going for a knock-out against rival Palo Alto Networks in a patent-dispute lawsuit related to next-generation firewalls that's set to go to trial in Delaware in February. And Palo Alto wants to Unified Communications take out Juniper in its own separate patent lawsuit. Juniper alleges that Palo Altos firewalls are based on intellectual property that Juniper gained in its $4 billion acquisition of NetScreen in 2004, and that this technology was developed by Nir Zuk, the former CTO at NetScreen, and Yuming Mao, a former engineering architect there. Later, Zuk and Mao went off to found Palo Alto, a maker of application-aware, or next-generation, firewalls.

Network Innovation Award: Palo Alto Networks next-generation firewalls

On the networking side you expect firewalls to take modern networking protocols; for example, dynamic routing protocols. When you are part of the network you have to speak the language of the network and communicate with routers and switches. This is unique for a firewall from all of the other security devices. Palo Alto recently expanded its virtualization firewall offering. How do virtual and physical firewalls differ -- and where must they be the same? Zuk:The main reason you need a virtualization firewall is that you can't see inside [a virtual environment] with a physical device. So if you have a SaaS provider that doesn't allow you to deploy physical devices on the network, you would deploy a virtual firewall there. The way virtualized data centers are built, traffic only goes from one rack to another. The [virtualization] firewall monitors traffic running between virtual machines.
